The preliminary results of a study
carried out with chloroquine by Fiocruz and the Tropical Medicine Foundation showed that the lethality in the group of patients with
Covid-19 tested, in serious condition, was 13%.
Of 81 inpatients who took the drug, 11 died.
The mortality rate seen in patients in the same condition who did not use the drug is 18%, according to international studies, including in China.
The proximity of the two indices does not allow to affirm, for the time being, that chloroquine can make a fundamental difference in the treatment of patients infected with the
new coronavirus .
"Optimists may think that [the rate with the use of chloroquine] is lower. Pessimists may think that it is the same. Statistically, it is the same, in the margin of confidence", says infectologist Marcus Lacerda, from
Fiocruz , who participates in the study .
