Belarus will start buying potatoes in Europe.
The government of Belarus lifted restrictions on the import of a number of agricultural goods, including potatoes, from the EU countries. This was reported in the press service of the Council of Ministers of the Republic. According to the resolution, starting from May 27, the import of potatoes, apples, onions and cabbage from the territory of “unfriendly countries” is allowed. The report of the Belarusian Cabinet notes that the decision was a “response” to the recent increase in Europe trade duties on agricultural products from Belarus. At the same time, the government stressed that in this way Minsk again demonstrates “openness, peacefulness and the principle of good-neighborliness”, similar to the decision on visa-free entry for citizens of the EU states.
The lifting of the ban, however, occurred against the backdrop of the food crisis in Belarus: in recent months, the country has seen an acute shortage of potatoes. In early May, the disappearance of the product from the shelves of stores was recognized by Lukashenko. In the incident, he accused local farmers, who, according to the head of state, were reoriented to export to Russia, where the price of potatoes is much higher."

"Meanwhile in Russia, potato prices have soared. According to state statistics agency Rosstat, retail prices rose 92% last year. By May 2025, year-over-year prices had climbed by 166.5% — making potatoes the fastest-rising food item in the country and setting a record for the highest annual increase since the start of recorded statistics in 2002.
Russia has also become the world’s most expensive market for wholesale potatoes. According to the agricultural analytics firm AB-Center, wholesale prices jumped 285.5% year-over-year by early April, rising from 11.4 rubles ($0.14) to 42.4 rubles ($0.53) per kilogram (excluding VAT).
By comparison, the global average stands at about 17 euro cents (roughly 15.5 rubles) per kilogram."
President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday acknowledged Russia’s mounting potato shortage, driven by underwhelming crop yields that have led to record-breaking price increases. “Yesterday [Monday], I met with representatives from various business sectors, including agriculture.
