13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi
Ch. 19 – In general, this is a movie with great demo material throughout, with a high-quality visual aesthetic and precise sounds, especially with the action scenes. Even the subtle moments have good surround activity (too many to list, but I like the sprinklers in the background in one of the earlier scenes). Once this chapter builds up to the firefight, lots of surround activity and various bass effects with each weapon having distinct sounds (I like the lowkey LFE thumping when the heavy machine gun fires). The true highlight is the second mortar though, where you can track it shooting upwards in the sky, and when it hits has a nice deeeeep bass hit with low frequency extension and a wall shaking effect.
1917
Ch. 13 – Not every demo scene needs disorienting action and heavy bass notes. This one is just a technical mastery both visually and audibly (the darkness and contrast with the light makes this perfect to test your black level performance). It is almost relaxing as the music and scene builds up. From the initial water drops and music cues, to the lighting effects from pitch black to the glows through the window and moving shadows…the real highlight to me is the subtlety of the flares that flutter up above and a nice showcase for overhead Atmos effects. The music starts roaring through the room and moves past you, but you can clearly distinguish the flare fluttering above you and landing in the surround left channel. The final shot of the burning church against the pitch-black looks like artwork. Nice.
Aquaman
Ch. 12 – Bass. If you want bass, watch this movie. All kinds of bass and frequency ranges from ULF to chest slams to wall shaking, even the voices and footsteps have heft to them. The entire movie has usage of the subwoofers from start to finish. My favorite is this chapter where Aquaman gets the trident, but before must fight the monster guarding it. Your walls will shake as they duke it out and the stones crumble. But the fun doesn’t really start until he grabs the trident (spoiler alert). That’s when the low frequencies really start, and you don’t hear it as much as you just feel your couch vibrating and room moving air. As the music crescendos and he appears from behind the waterfall (“the one true king”)…if you have subwoofers with good linear 13hz extension at volume, you will understand the smile on my face!
Arrival
Ch. 2 – This scene takes a while to get to the good stuff; the part where the helicopter lands in the front yard and takes them to the site. I like the overall dynamics of this entire scene…mostly revolving around the helicopter. Even though it’s not in Atmos, it feels like it flies over her house and goes from quiet to loud with authority. This scene is also great to show off black levels of your TV, but I just love the way the sound of the helicopter varies as the camera perspective changes, very precise, and once they board up and get ready for takeoff the low frequencies start ramping up and feel it in the couch while the blades feel like they are above you. While airborne and they put the earpieces on, it has a great effect how it gets quieter, but the bass is all really low frequency at a low volume that you can still feel. In general, you just feel like you’re in the helicopter with them and even though it’s not super bass heavy, there’s just a lot of variance and subtlety that can show off your setup.
Black Hawk Down
Ch. 3 – Sonic assault. I always thought of this mix as more “realistic” sounding with the echoes and “lighter” punch of the weapons compared to the usual bass boosts more modern mixes use (i.e. John Wick). Before the main event, there’s also some nice Atmos effects as the radio voice in the control room comes from the ceiling speakers, giving it a nice touch. Anyway, a nice subwoofer treat is the famous “Irene” scene, especially the quick hit shot where the soldiers are running from the hangar to their choppers. Unsuspecting viewers might think a small earthquake is happening; not the wall shaking kind, but the swaying kind. As they board up and the blades start ramping up, the low rumble persists, followed by a more thunderous bass as they fly over the interrogation room and the glass of water starts shaking on the table. The tight bass drums of the soundtrack sound nice too.
First Man
Ch. 7 – Although First Man has a more rugged and janky feel to the sound mix (almost claustrophobic), it’s intentional. That doesn’t mean it’s not a technical marvel, as it shows off a lot of detail and precision. This is a nice Atmos scene and has several elements to show off. The way the stage jiggles, you can hear all the squeaky lights swaying too, with some clear height effects sounding like they are directly above you. You can hear the rocket in the background take off and it shifts in the sound stage as the camera swings. The way the air from the tubes wheezes and hisses left to right as they approach the pod makes it feel like you’re there, and once they sit in their seats you can hear the change in the audio getting much closer and personal and notice the suits crunching around in their seats as they try to get comfortable. The hatch closing is a nice Atmos effect as you can hear it in the right ceiling as it swings closed with a nice bass thump towards the center channel.
Ch. 15 – This is just a nice mesmerizing scene from start to finish. The music, the cinematography, and sounds. I can’t even describe it but makes me feel pride for humanity.
Deepwater Horizon
Ch. 3 – While this movie is known for its action and bass, I like how quality the overall mix is in general. I like this scene because it sounds like you’re there in the outdoors and I like the helicopter effects and subtle bass notes. There’s also a nice jump scare and thump with the surprise bird strike.
Ch. 9 – Lots of energy in the sound mix as the pipes start bursting into the room, and some good bass that persists. What I like about this scene is that even when it’s loud, it remains clear and maintains the distinct sounds all around. You feel like you are in the room and it doesn’t sound fatiguing (i.e. some Nolan movies which just crank up EVERYTHING).
Ch. 11 – Good all-around scene that has surround effects and clarity, and then it builds up to some nice bass with the explosions.
Hacksaw Ridge
Ch. 9 – You need to fast forward a little bit since the chapters are long, but this is a nice torture test of your subwoofers and how deep they extend. It’s the famous artillery shelling, and a lot of the sound in the room is ULF where you feel it more than hear it. It pounds your chest but it’s also not damaging to your ears, since it’s not overly boosted like other movies. This is the kind of bass I enjoy, where it extends deep and doesn’t need major boosts. You can keep this scene going for once they climb up and the action starts; lots of active surrounds and height channels screaming with bullets whirling by. You feel you are in there with them.
Fury
Ch. 4 – The main event is the tank battle that this scene ends with, but I also like the beginning of this chapter and the ambiance surround activity in the far background. The planes flying overhead, bombs exploding in the distance…you really feel immersed and it and it makes good usage of all your speakers. But the tank battle though! Once that first shell goes flying by, you will be ducking. The machine guns in the trenches pack a nice bass note that you feel in the couch, and the tank shells pack a nice hard and precise impact to them. With all the action going on, there’s still nice clarity and defined channel activity giving it a nice 3D envelope where you are looking for cover.
Godzilla
Ch. 1 – Similar to Aquaman, this movie has plenty of bass in every scene and is overall a very aggressive mix. The opening credits will shake your walls and is a good test to start the movie and let you know what you’re in for. However, there’s also good Atmos moments here too. Once the movie kicks in and Mothra hatches, once the alpha signal gets locked in, you hear some very distinct effects and roar from the ceiling (top right mostly) channels.
Ch. 8 – This scene has some good spatial cues throughout, especially when he is outside in the rain and about to get on the chopper. The grand finale is when Mothra appears. Cool scene and the music envelops you.
The House with a Clock in its Walls
Ch. 1 - Opening credits has fantastic 10 second use of all the surround channels, with clocks tick tocking all around you and making you feel like you're spinning. When the big clock chimes, it feels like it is above you and pulsating past you.
Ch. 14 - Short and simple scene in the candy shop, once the uncle slaps his hand on the counter and a bunch of candy goes flying up over our heads. Good use of surrounds and Atmos.
Interstellar
Ch. 17 - Nice deep bass rumble as they approach the giant black hole, puts a smile on my face. Also nice use of rattling and clanging from the surrounds as the ship shakes about.
John Wick
Ch. 9 - The night club scene has great overall sound quality. Nice variance of ambiance, bass, music, clarity and detail as the scene progresses. The bass in the lockerroom before he heads to the bath house hits nice and deep in the background. Once the action picks up, the guns each pack a nice little thump and radiate with some echo in the basement. Once he pulls out the big gun, there's a nice shockwave of LFE.
Ch. 11 - The church scene has a nice gun sound as it echoes and hits short and hard with his single shots. As it progresses into the parking lot shootout, there's nice overall immersion and you feel like you're in the scene looking for cover. Some of the guns have nice bass to them too, and I like the detail in the shells hitting the ground along with the broken glass.
Kong
Ch. 4 - Fantastic deep bass and good action. There's lots of surround activity on all channels, but the money shot is as Kong is revealed. Bonus, the opening chapter/scene of the movie has fun surround activity too with the dogfight.
Logan
Ch. 10 & 11 - The first part of Ch. 10 is just a good quick test for Atmos. As the train rumbles in the background, there's some good rattling and shaking effects of things around the room which gives nice spatial cues. The Ch. 11 scene is an action scene and nice clean bass with some of the weapon fire and the music beats. It ends with a nice crash through the fences which leads to a deep bass extension as they try to break through it.
Lone Survivor
Ch. 4 - This one isn't Atmos but I like this demo scene for a couple reasons. First, helicopter scenes seem to make good demo material! I like the subtle ways the sound changes as they traverse through the canyons from the exterior of the helicopter, and the scene changes to inside, and a nice little LFE rumble that extends pretty deep. As they approach to land, you get some really nice deep bass from the helicopter that makes you feel like you're inside with them. Once it leaves, there's peace and quiet and you hear nothing but crickets and coyote sounds in the distance...followed with the plane flyby. Nice.
The Magnificent Seven
Ch. 1 and Ch. 14 - The opening of the movie has good unexpected explosions that extend really deep and prolonged as it echoes through the town. It's a quick scene but nice subwoofer test. Overall, I like the sound mix of the movie, especially the score (when Denzel rides into town, for example). The subwoofer highlight is Ch. 14 though, there's some crazy (again unexpected) low frequency extension on some of the shots as the horses come charging towards the final showdown, it's also prolonged for several seconds. If you have a ported subwoofer with deep extension, you will feel the air move and your couch sway. It's very low key and a nice effect.
Midway
Ch. 2 - A showcase scene for your subwoofers and surround activity precision. Once the attack begins, man there's some persistent deep bass notes from the music and couch shaking explosions that have you holding on. The overall clarity of the height channels and surrounds make you feel like there's planes and bullets flying all around you. The entire movie has a high quality sound design, but this chapter has a little bit of everything and will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation
Ch. 1 - The music just fills the entire room and it's a fun exciting demo that builds up. The subtle breeze bristling through the grass makes you feel like you're outdoors, and once the plane starts its engines there's some nice low deep LFE that makes you feel next to it. Fun scene.
Ch. 8/9 - This is great test for Atmos. As they parachute down there's clear height activity as they quickly fly from behind and overhead the listening position towards the front right speaker. There's nice detail as the scene progresses and good ambiant effects from the hallway, security scanner, the water pumps etc. Once he dives in, there's fantastic Atmos effects as the machine spins around. Later on in the sewer, I like the echo effects that radiate through the room and sound realistic. The bike chase scene has some quick hitting bass too as they bounce down the stairways.
Overlord
Ch. 1 - We all know this one by now. Thrilling scene with some crazy bass once the green light comes on to signal the jump. This scene is good chaotic fun but maintains clarity. Once he lands and emerges from the water, there's a crashing plane that clearly flies overhead above you, and shortly thereafter there's machine gun fire that feels like it whistles right past you and you duck.
A Quiet Place
Ch. 3 - Even during the quiet scenes, you feel the air and subtle ambiance. Great mix overall. As the scene progresses after dinner when they are playing a board game and accidently knock over the lantern...there's a nice deep bass rumble. You then really hear the distant noises approaching and when the racoons are above you in the ceiling, the entire sounds are from the height channels and very immersive.
Ready Player One
Ch. 2 - One of the most impressive audio and visual demo scenes. So much going on but you feel like you're in there racing. Nice deep bass, clear treble (like the coins being collected), engines roaring, crashes everywhere. There's even subtle height effects like after he slides under the big rig trailer, he pushes the button to close his suidice doors which all come from the height speakers. From the T-rex to Kong to everything else, just fun thrilling scene.
